NextGenPhys@NL established
At NWO Physics 2025 in Veldhoven, around 25 early-career physics PIs gathered for the Young Dutch Physics Council meeting and set the stage for launching NextGenPhys@NL— a new independent network created to unite and empower emerging physics researchers in the Netherlands. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by those new to the national research landscape, our community embraced a vision of robust networking, strategic career support, and active engagement with policymakers and funding agencies. Drawing inspiration from similar initiatives like NextGenChem@NL, they will leverage shared expertise while tailoring events specifically to the needs of the NL physics community. Key priorities include fostering meaningful connections among early career colleagues, addressing funding challenges through coordinated discussion and facilitating face-to-face engagements with decision makers and funding officers, as well as sharing career-building advice through interactive meetings and mentorship programs. In addition, they are committed to developing influential white papers, roadmaps, and research agendas that will shape future policies and drive transformative change in the scientific landscape.
The meeting also focused on practical membership guidelines to maintain the“next-generation” focus, such as fixed membership periods and clear transition paths into advisory roles, ensuring a continuous influx of fresh ideas while welcoming newcomers to the Netherlands. A diverse board with representatives from TU Delft, Groningen University, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University, and Radboud University, will lead the efforts in communication, event organization, recruitment, and lobbying. With plans for annual gatherings as a full-day event rotating across universities and bi-annual online events, they aim to build an inclusive, forward-looking community. NextGenPhys@NL is not only about meeting current challenges but also about creating a vibrant ecosystem where emerging physicists drive research innovation, influence funding strategies, and shape a sustainable future for physics in the Netherlands.
